Robert Burns is thought to have written this verse around 1787 and is now read out at Scottish social gatherings or on Burns nights suppers :-

large silhouette by samuel metford
wonderful large silhoutte depicting a family group in their drawing room, the window with scenery beyond
and signed samuel metford fecit, overleigh, 1845.

samuel metford was a prominent silhouette artist born in glastonbury somerset in 1810, he moved to america in 1834 to continue his art until 1844 when he came back to england, metford was taught by augustin edouart, the best french exponent of silhouette profiles.

provenance:- bought from their decendants, the family depicted are thought to be the simpson family, relatives of the Gilletts, a wealthy family who owned overleigh house, street, somerset and the family tree has been drawn on the back of the silhouette.

complete set of 6 batchelor's hall hunting prints, original hand coloured steel engravings in their original mounts and frames (re-backed) depicting the various stages of hunting, each with verses below.
